General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

It is not safe to take these antidepressant medications together.

Sertraline is a selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitors (SSRI) used to treat depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder, panic disorder, anxiety disorders, post-traumatic stress disorder, and premenstrual dysphoric disorder.

Duloxetine is a selective serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor (SSNRI) used to treat major depressive disorder, general anxiety disorder and painful neuropathy.

If taken together these medications can increase the risk of serious condition called the Serotonin syndrome which is characterized by confusion, hallucination, seizure, high blood pressure and increased heart rate, fever, excessive sweating, blurred vision, muscle stiffness, tremor, incoordination, stomach cramp, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea.

Severe cases may result in coma and even death. So, avoid taking the new prescription of Duloxetine.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Mohammed Taher Ali
