Can Spironolactone Be Used For Acne?

I have a 19-year-old daughter who is suffering with acne - acne especially associated with her menstrual cycle. She is on the pill and that has not been helpful with her acne. It has been suggested to me by a very reputable dermatologist that we try Spironolactone. Do you know anything about the use of this medication, off brand, for treating acne?

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

You can use Spironolactone for treating acne. When acne doesn't go after using local n systemic (oral) antibiotic as well as oral retinoids then we can give patients spironolactone.

Can you please list which medication she had taken ?? Let me know the detail medicinal history, accordingly, I can suggest the spironolactone.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
