Can Valsartan Be Taken For High Blood Pressure?

I have never taken any drugs, but was put on Valsartan 80 mg for High Blood Pressure. I am 75 years old in excellent health and very active. My blood pressure has been around 150 over 80 lately. I exercise a lot, just came home from a 150 mile bike ride (took 5 days though) Do you think Valsartan is the best I can do for my big Blood Pressure?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Dear Sir, Hi & Welcome.

Yes, it can be taken for the effective control of high BP.

Valsartan is an angiotensin II receptor blocker commonly prescribed for the treatment of hypertension, to lower blood pressure.
Lowering blood pressure reduces the risk of fatal and nonfatal cardiovascular events, primarily strokes and myocardial infarctions.
Along with this medication, you need to have certain lifestyle changes for the effective control of high BP like:
1. Avoid smoking, alcohol, and stress.
2. Reduced the intake of dietary salt to less than 4 gm/day.
3. Continue doing exercise regularly.
4. Check your lipid levels, if high should be treated accordingly.
5. You must have a baseline ECG, kidney function tests, blood glucose level, etc.

Hope the advice given above would be useful.
Best regards.
