Can Xanax Be Taken After Consuming Alcohol?

Hello I drank about 3 glasses of wine over a 5 hour period, I finished the last glass at 9:00PM. It is now 1:00AM and I am having insomnia and a lot of anxiety which I cannot alleviate through my regular meditation and breathing exercises. I would like to take .5mg Xanax prescribed by my MD but am concerned because I drank wine earlier. Will it be ok to take? I just want to get to sleep, I won t be out and about or driving a car.

Hi,

Xanax contains Alprazolam. Drinking alcohol and taking Xanax could be extremely dangerous. According to the research studies, both alcohol and Xanax are cleared from the body by the same liver enzymes. As both drugs are metabolised by the same set of compounds, it takes longer for the body to detoxify when Xanax and alcohol are taken together.

Hence, alcohol would exaggerate the actions of Xanax, which would cause severe adverse effects on the body. Combination of these two needs to be strictly avoided.
