Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Hello. I drank a glass of wine about 10:40pm. I just woke up at 2:42am. I feel myself on the verge of a possible panic attack. Has enough time passed to take a xanax. I am not a heavy or every day drinker. I would say once or twice a month max for a glass of wine. I also do not take xanax often. I used to take meds for anxiety & went through a phase where I had frequent panic attacks. I no longer take daily anxiety medication & the panic attacks are rare, although I did have one 2 weeks ago. Back to the original question, is it safe to take the xanax 3 hours later?
Hi, Thanks for posting in HCM. I understand your concern. Xanax contains 'alprazolam', which is a benzodiazepine. It is used to treat anxiety disorders, panic disorders, and anxiety caused by depression. Since this drug would make you dizzy or drowsy, alcoholic beverages needs to be avoided as this medication can increase the effects of alcohol. It would actually take your liver three hours to metabolize alcohol, consumed in any form. It would be better to consume this medication only after 6 to 8 hours after an intake of alcohol, as takes certain amount of time for the metabolized products to wean off the body. Hope the information provided would be helpful. All the best.
