Can A Fetus Grow Without Heart Beats During Pregnancy?

my girlfriend went in for an ultrasound. Baby was measured at 6 weeks 3 days with no heartbeat. We went again at what should have been 7 weeks 2 days and the fetus (not just the sac) had grown to almost 8 weeks but still no heartbeat found. We are scheduled to go back in two weeks. Can a fetus still grow if there is no heartbeat and has passed, or is there a good possibility that the position of the baby just made it hard to detect. She has a tilted cervix if that helps the answer.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello thank you for writing us here.
Possible reasons for absence of heartbeats in a foetus are dextrocardia where the heart is present on right side or possibly (quite rare though) present outside the thorasic cavity.
The foetus could also have weak heartbeat so I would suggest to wait for next reports.
Let's hope for the best I wished I could be your doctor because its quite interesting hearing from you. xxxx
