Can A Glass Splinter Stuck Under The Skin Cause An Infection?

About 6 or 7 months ago I got a tiny chard of glass in my thumb and I was never able to get it out. I have tried repeatedly soaking in very hot water with no luck. The pain caused in grabbing things in that area had subsided for a few months and I thought it had worked itself out, until today. I went to grab something and, wow, I’m pretty certain the glass is still in there. Is this something to worry about in terms of infection or anything other than being uncomfortable?

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

As glass splinter is a foreign body, it will surely cause infection and can lead to abscess. Please rush to your family physician/surgeon and get the spicules removed and follow his/her prescription. Please do not delay and do not manipulate yourself.

Get well soon.

Regards,
Dr. P. Siva Subramanian.
