Can A Heart Surgery Treat Hypertension?

I am a 61 year old white male. At age fifteen I was diagnosed with coarctation of the aorta, when my blood pressure was taken for the first time and was 190/90 in both arms. Surgery was performed, and immediately after surgery the blood pressure dropped to 120/80, and I was led to believe that the problem was resolved. However, a few months later the systolic pressure had risen to 160, and I was put on blood pressure medication, and have been on various medications all my life since then. Why did not the surgery resolve the hypertension, as it apparently was expected to?

Hi,

Late postoperative systemic hypertension in the absence of residual coarctation is related partly to the duration of preoperative hypertension.
All operated or stented coarctation patients deserve a high-quality MRI or CT procedure in follow-up as systolic hypertension (sometimes only during exercise) is in part due to a diffuse vasculopathy and to noncompliance of the stented or surgically reconstructed region.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
