Can A Hysterectomy Be Done To Stop Periods?

I m curious whether doctors will perform hysterectomies or similar procedures electively. I m looking into future sterilization options that would also end my period permanently. I m on medroxyprogesterone (I think) for nonstop vaginal bleeding, which has stopped my period entirely for over a year now. I love it, but I ll have to buy it repeatedly throughout my life (until menopause), which makes me wonder if there is a long-term cost-effective option for someone who is surgery-adverse; one time to end both problems for good and not have to worry.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

You are right, hysterectomy can be done for such problems if not responding to the drugs. However as it is a major surgery so its best reserved for cases which cant be treated with drugs. So you can always opt for it , but the the benefits and risk should be weighed. I personally advise to avoid it if drugs are working for you , yes if the drugs are causing any problem you can always discuss this option with your doctor.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
