Can A Pinched Nerve In The Neck Be Treated With An Ice Pack?

I think I have pinched a nerve in my neck or shoulder blades .It is very intense at times. Doctor gave me hydrocodon 1 Q 4 hrs. Have been afraid to take it except at night. Just took one hope I xcan stay awake. will an ice pack be ok. have used one in the past years
