Can A Tampon Retained Inside For A Month Cause Any Complications?

After having what I thought was flu for a week , headache , neck pain lathargic , etc I found a retained tampon which must of been lost for a month. Had noticed bad smell and abnormal heavy blood loss. I have removed it myself, do I need to see a doctor or will it be ok now

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

The presentation of narrated symptoms suggest that there is already vaginal infection established, which requires certain specific antibiotic therapy to control.

My suggestion at present
- Sitz bath with antiseptic liquid.
- Gentian violet scrub.
- Plenty of liquids.
- Appointment with your OBGY doctor at earliest.

Thanks.

Take care.
