Can Alcohol Be Consumed While Suffering From Myelofibrosis?

My Hemoglobin I just found out in the last couple of days is only at 72, my platelets low at 59. The reason being is that I have MYEOFIBROSIS and require 2units of blood approx every 5 weeks. I am wondering if it is stil ok for me to have a glass of white wine or should I abstain from alcohol altogether?? Will one glass of wine effect my hemoglobin?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Let me tell you that if you have myelofibrosis and you are getting your treatment with Ruxolitinib, one of the mainstay drugs given in myelofibrosis, then you are not advised to take alcohol in any form.

This may increase the risk of side effects that affect your bone marrow function, resulting in low numbers of different types of blood cells. You may be more likely to develop anemia, bleeding problems, or infections.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Prabhash Verma,
