Can An Endocrine Problem Cause Facial Hair In A Woman Of 45 ?
I am a clinical social worker, and I work with many clients who have chronic health problems and conditions. I currently have a female patient, 45, with a long-term history of extreme facial hair, to the point that she must shave every day. By the time she sees me for her appointment in the evenings, she has five O clock shadow. She has an extreme fear of doctors and only recently with my help has been able to attend appointments with a primary care physician for only the most basic care. She is worried that she has PCOS and cannot tolerate a gyn exam. I am just wondering if her facial hair could be the symptom of a more severe hormonal or endocrine problem and if I should focus more on this with her and/or push for communication with her physician. She has been overweight for much of her life and has a difficult time losing weight. She also has rheumatoid arthritis.
