Can An Infant Be Breast Feed While Suffering From Herpes?

I just found out my daughter-in-law has herpes. She was informed over six years ago and has delivered three more children since the diagnosis by c-section. My son was not informed after four years of marriage. My question is.....My DIL said, it is safe for her to breast feed her infant. The baby leg broke out from the knee to the ankle with many sores that blistered, oozed, and has spread now to the other leg. The doctor was not informed of the mothers herpes. He gave a crème for dry skin. Should we be concerned? YYYY@YYYY Thank you, Barbara

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Women with herpes simplex virus infection may transmit HSV to their infants by direct or indirect contact with the lesion.

She can breastfeed her baby if no lesion is present on the breast and if active lesions elsewhere on the mother is completely covered.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
