Can An Injured Finger With Heavy Bleeding And Protruding Flesh Be Serious?

About two days ago my husband was working on a car and got his thumb caught between the head and the timing chain cog. He was eventually able to pry his thumb free. It was bleeding really bad he bandaged his wound and kept on working this morning his hand is swollen so bad that the meat from inside the wound is coming out and hurts really bad. Does he need to go to the hospital?

Hello and welcome to HCM
From your description of the trauma and wound, it seems quite deep and requiring medical attention.
Firstly an open wound like this needs to be cleaned thoroughly and disinfected well to make sure there are no debris/ dust etc inside.
Continuing to work with the injury will increase the swelling and discomfort and also prevent healing and delay it from healing properly.
An infection of the wound will also cause more swelling, redness, pus or fluid discharge and spread to the surrounding tissue if ignored.
We also do not know how deep the injury is and if the bone is injured/broken. In that case it will heal in an improper way later affecting movement.
I would advise you to definitely visit the ER, get a tetanus shot. Get the wound cleaned and probably sutured to make sure it heals properly and as soon as possible. An open wound will take longer to heal and leave a big scar if not closed properly. Also exposing it to infection.
Any signs of infection can also be seen to.
Visit the ER and follow the treatment advised, along with cleaning and dressing with antiseptic as advised.
Hope this helps.
