Can Antibiotics Be Taken For Severe Cough With Phlegm And Wheezing?

Hi I came down with a raging flu on weds. Went to the doctor on friday. Was sent home with prescription cough syrup. I am coughing up phlegm non stop sometimes dark sometimes clear. I ve been in bed all day and now I ve developed a gurgling and wheezing in my chest. I was told my illness was viral but clearly I have an infection. Is it time for an antibiotic? I had pneumonia and strep after a vicious flu last year that took 2 months go recover from. Thank you

Hi,
There is not much difference of symptoms of vial and bacterial infection.
Sometimes there might be having mixed infection as well.
So it is better to go for antibiotic medicine to prevent respiratory tract complication like pneumonia.
consult your doctor and discuss about this.
Meanwhile continue with cough suppressant.
