Can Antihistamine Medication For Allergy Be Given During Pregnancy?

My wife is pregnant and in the 28th week. For the last 2+ weeks she is having cough - dry cough. It has aggravated in the last 3 days. When we went to the gynecologist\obstetrician she has prescribed some cough syrup, and some anti histamine for allergy releif. However, there is no relief yet. The continuous cough is painful now. Can you advice how we should go about

Your wife is 28 week pregnant . In most of studies till date antihistaminics are found to be safe drugs. There are more studies on 1st generation antihistaminics and they are found to be safe and they are not secreted in milk also..so safe in breastfeeding mother also. For newer antihistaminics such as cetrizine fexofenadine etc..There are few studies only..showing no adverse pregnancy outcome..so she can use it.most of the teratogenic effects of drug occur in first 12 weeks of pregnancy this is the period of organogenesis .apart from this chronic cough is very troublesome for pregnant women this can cause preterm labour also..so it should be manage properly..hope this will help.
