Can Applying Ice Over A Sore And Swollen Wrist Make It Worse?

hello my daughter is in gymnastics and she was complaining that her wrist was sore and it was a bit swollen. I was told to apply ice to it by using an ice cube and gliding it back and forth over the sore area. I did it for a few minutes and now the area that I rolled ice over is lighter in color but raised and then border aurround the raised area is read. Did I just make it worse??
