Hi,I am Raju.A.T (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I am a 20 year old female with asthma and allergies. I am athletic, but am also frequently sick because of sinus infections. More recently, within the past year or so, I have found times where I have a potent smell of ammonia in my nose, but it isn t external. I am athletic, and sleep properly, is there a cause for this smell?
General & Family Physician, Dr. Vasudha's Response
Hi, I understand your concern. The potent smell of ammonia in your nose is not due to asthma, it's secondary to sinusitis you had.It is Parosmia. Sinusitis is infection & inflammation of sinus/nasal cavity. During the course of infection the sensory nerves ( responsible for smell are destroyed. So the sense of smell is hampered & the distructed nerves when stimulated, have wrong perception of smell- as you have it as smell of ammonia. Though there is no cure for the condition at present, it can regress with advent of time, Till then keeping the sinuses clean by inhaling vaporas per need/ avoiding exposure to allergens / B complex, specially B12 supplementation can be followed. Thanks.
