Can Cold And Sneezing Cause Any Problem For Perform Surgery?
Hello, I have been on a waiting list for a l5s1 discectomy, which will be performed next tuesday under a general anaesthetic. i have developed a slight cold over the last day, sneezing, and mypartner has a heavier cold. Should I tell the hospital? I don't want to have the operation cancelled as I have been off work for so long, I want to get it over with. Will the anaesthetist be able to tell anyway? Is there any danger in me not telling them? I am otherwise a healthy 40 year old man. I do have hydrocephalus controlled by VP shunt, but there have been no problems with this for the last 13 years.
I do understand your concern and would like to guide you in this regard. Please convey your doctor that you are having cold, or else you may develop complications during anaesthesia. Do not worry! With appropriate intervention it can cured before the date of surgery.
After going through your description, I do feel you are having an Upper Respiratory Tract Infection, which could be of viral in eitiology. Hence, you can start with the home remedies; if you are not getting better within a couple of days, consult your doctor.
1. Drink plenty of warm water
2. Do steam inhalation 3-4 times a day
3. You can use OTC xylometazoline or Oxymetazolinenasal spray, for not more than 5 days.
4. Oral decongestants will also be beneficial in reducing the cold
Wish you good health
Regards
