Can Congenital Lobar Emphysema Recur After Surgery?

Hello, my questions are regarding my no 2 year old son, Lucas. He was born with congenital lobar emphysema of the upper left lobe. Later, it was found that he had a ccam in the lower left lobe. When he was 9 months old he went through surgery. The ccam was removed completely from the lower left lobe. However, the surgeon stated that the upper left lobe had begun to repair itself, therefore, a good portion of the upper left lobe was removed. But, a small portion of the lung containing the cle was not removed. Is it possible that either condition could come back or grow larger? What symptoms would i need to look out for? Should i be concerned if he has had serious problems with going to sleep for five weeks now? Please help

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi,

Noted the history about your 2 year old son undergoing surgery for congenital lobar emphysema, worried about recurrence as part of it had to be left and also wants to know the precautions.
Lobar emphysema is a congenital condition in which once removed in-toto should not recur.
So not to worry about a properly operated part.
The part which is left behind may not show anything unless goes into expansion to cause emphysema, watch for breathlessness, chest pain or so on.
Review X-rays can help a lot.Follow the instruction as given by your treating Doctors to be sure about everything and stop worrying.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. T. Chandrakant, General Surgeon
