Can Cyst In Left Ovary Cause Missed Periods?

I ve been missing periods for varying time spans over the past three yrs. I am 43 yrs old & thought stress to be a factor. I just had an ultrasound after missing my cycle for 4 months and a cyst was found on my left ovary. Because my cycle has been so off, should I be worried this is more than a cysts that should resolve over time.

I understand your concern.
Yes, Ovarian cyst can cause missed periods.Still as you had no periods for 4 months( prolonged amenorrhea) I would suggest you to get investigated for certain associated conditions like
- PCOD-by getting USGlower abdomen & observe ovarian condition
- Thyroid function tests- for possible hypothyroidism
- CA 125 test to exclude possibility of ovarian malignancy.
The cysts that have prolonged lac of menses/ non resolving cysts /more number / greater in size>5 cm ( complex cyst)-10 cm in simple cyst )/ have Ca 125 test significant -need active treatment.
It can be in form of medicines ( Cyclical hormones)/ surgical in nature.
* Though automatic resolution is possible, & menstrual irregularities are common feature of ovarian cysts-You should consult a gynecologist for proper assessment of the cyst & then follow the advise given.
