Can Degenerative Disc Disease Be Treated Without A Surgery?

good evening, Ive been told that I need a level 5 fusion low back. I really don t want to do this horrible surgery. are there alternatives to this surgery? my issues are L2-4 broad range stenosis, degenerative back, arthritis,4 herniated disks, superimposed broad based central and right foraminal disc protrusion. moderate disc space narrowing. moderate diffuse disc bulge. and there is more but enough for now. this is just 3 disc s there are 3 other disks with same type of plus others. Im daily in a huge degree of pain 8-10 22-7. surgen has me weening off pain meds as surgery is intense, and long he says. I say Id like him to walk a day in my shoes and see if he wouldnt be screeming for drugs. Ive not called him once to o.k. me pain meds but my family is suffering along with me. and the toddler misses his mommy. my family cant handdle the crying and moaning(in pain!) they feel I should be hospitalized, but with insurance the way it is that s just not an option any longer. if you have any idea what I could possibly do, I would greatly appriciate it. I have the financial abilities to travel, outside of phoenix if there was a better place for surgery than barrows spine and brain center. bye for now Linda Age 59 Phoenix az. YYYY@YYYY

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

As a first line management, you can go for analgesics and exercises.

Consult an orthopedician and get evaluated.

Surgery is the last resort and can be considered in advanced disease only.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Shinas Hussain,
General & Family Physician
