Can Delayed Periods Be A Side-effect Of Emergency Contraceptive Pill, Postinor?

Hello,
I had sex with my girlfriend 3 days before expected periods when the condom failed. After 8 hours she took Postinor 2 (2nd pill 9 hours later instead of 12). Now she is 3 days late in her periods. Is there a risk of pregnancy, or is it more likely to be a side effect of the medicine?

Hello,
This is more likely to be due to the medication. Emergency contraceptive pills contain excess hormone and thus create hormonal disturbances. This can lead to breakthrough bleed and delayed cycles. She can expect a delay of the normal period by a week or two if she does not see a withdrawal bleed now. Also, intercourse just before the onset of a cycle is safe as the fertile period is over by then. Ovulation occurs two weeks prior to the onset of the next period in anyone. Hope your query is clarified. Take care.
