Psychiatrist 's  Response
hi,

Irritability and agitation can be a found in certain persons with depression and usually improves with antidepressant medications.

The exact problem with your sister needs to be assessed. I assume you mean sadness and crying spells, when you describe "depression". But for diagnosing it as depressive disorder- a detailed evaluation like mental & physical fatigueness, changes in sleep & appetite, presence of worries and negative thoughts, is needed.

I suppose she is having these problems for quite a long period (may be years/ more than a decade). What had caused her to loose confidence? What have been keeping her in this state?- all these would need to be known before prescribing specific treatment.

I would suggest you to consult a psychiatrist and keep hope. The problems would definitely come down, and if its a depressive episode chances of complete recovery is very high. I appreciate you for caring your sister, also now its time to take some practical steps to help her come out of it.

Psychiatrist Dr. Sunil Gupta's  Response
Hi,

I appreciate your concern for your sister. Getting irritable and angry can be very much due to depression. Her other symptoms of decreased self confidence, not wanting to study are also explainable by depression.

You should seek a psychiatric consultation for your sister and get her started on treatment. Medications like escitalopram or sertraline would be effective for her.

I hope I was able to answer your query.

Best wishes,

Dr. Sunil Gupta
