Can Diet And Sugar Levels Affect A Child S Behavior?

5 yr old male extremely active...probably hyper. but Not ADHD as he is extremely smart, pays attention to detail, etc. Question: about 10 am every day he has an episode where he is misbehaves and is sometimes out of control. Wondered if possibly sugar level drops. Pricking finger shows levels just above 100 each time. No food for at least a hour and usually longer. Picky eater. In the morning prefers grits or oatmeal. We ve been trying to get more protein in his diet. Stopped Claritin. Melatonin at night with bed at 7:30-ish and up about 6-6:30am. Started Natural Calm last week. Since symptoms seem some better. Maybe taking the edge off. Could diet and sugar levels affect behavior at the same time every day?

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Diet and sugar levels does have an effect on child's behavior. Increased sugar concentration can make a child hyperactive, especially when it is supplied from refined sugars. But since the levels are indicating it to be around 100mg, it should not matter much in your case. However, you can supplement some form of protein or fruits along with the regular meal which you are giving, so that it helps to regulate an increase in blood glucose. In case the symptoms, you can consult child Psychologist for further evaluation and management.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
