Can Elevated TSH And High Sugar Level Cause Weight Gain?

For the past 3 years, despite rigorous diet and exercise and staying on a 1,100 calories a day diet, I have gained 30 pounds. Every time my doctors does my labs, the TSH number appears to get higher. This time is was a 2.6. He subsequently did a Free T-4 test and it come back as normal, but in the lower range of normal. I am tired all the time. My hair has gotten really thin and I have high blood pressure and high cholesterol, which I am being treated for. However, as well as the TSH going up, so has the fasting glucose number. This is the 4th time it has been high and my doctor doesn t feel I should be on any medication. I don t know what to do about my weight. I even tried cutting back to 600 calories a day with extensive exercise but it did nothing. Can the weight gain be connected to my TSH number and/or my high sugar number? Should I be treated for either of these?

Hello
With what you've told me, I would consider you to be hypothyroid and put you on synthroid to get your TSH level down to around the 1.0 level. T3 is the active form of thyroid hormone so a normal T4 doesn't mean you have a normally functioning thyroid gland
