Can Elevated Liver Enzymes Cause Yellowness In Eyes?
My granddaughter was born at 3lb 8oz, 5 weeks early....she is now 9, started having yellowish tinge to her eyes a few months ago, from when she was little she has had problems moving her bowels...had a stomach X-ray done recently and they said she was backed up....also had her school physical and blood work showed elevated bilirubin, repeated test, still elevated....liver enzymes normal....what can be the cause...

I have gone through your query and can understand your concern..
Normally the eye consist of two visible portion
1. Dark or colored portion in the center known as cornea
2. white portion on sides of dark portion known as Sclera
As per you mentioned your granddaughter's sclera must have become yellowish. Yellow sclera can be a sign of jaundice, which is caused by an increase in the level of bilirubin in the bloodstream. Which occurs due to conditions that cause liver damage or dysfunction such as hepatitis & Elevated liver enzymes are common in this.
jaundice is very common in infants & neonates due to immature liver. Phototherapy is done in infants & neonates & slowly she would recover & her bilrubin level, liver enzymes would get normal.

I really appreciate your concern, eye infection could be the likely condition and it need to be clinically confirmed, for the liver enzyme in absence of clinical symptoms it is nothing to worry still better to keep eye open for any changes if ever notice like vomiting, fever, loss of appetite else this is nothing to worry,, hope this information helps, take care have a nice day.
