Can Enlarged Heart/spleen And Fluid Around Heart/belly Be Shown On Foetal Ultrasound?

my baby was still born. my entire pregnancy we were told that everything was perfect, until 35 weeks. at this point we were told that she was measuring two weeks behind and the amniotic fluid was low but not dangerously low. at my 37 week visit they did another ultrasound and said that my baby was normal, this was on a friday. By saturday my sweet baby girl was gone. they did an autopsy and said she had an enlarged heart and spleen as well as fluid around her heart and in her belly. wouldnt these things show up on an ultrasound?

Hello,
I am very sorry for what had happened to you. It was very unfortunate. Fluid in the fetal abdomen would definitely be visible with a high resolution sonogram and so is the fluid collection elsewhere. In today's world where operations are performed on an unborn child, it is very unfortunate that such things still happen. The organ enlargement raises suspicion of 'Hydrops Fetalis' and this should be excluded so as to take precautions in future. Other rare genetic diseases are also a possibility. If, there was no known organomegaly earlier, the sudden death may have been caused due to a tight cord around the neck, placental separation, severe infection etc. Hope this helps.
