Can Failure Of The Liver And Kidney Be Treated?

My friends husband has long standing alcohol use, abdominal varices that have been banded before, liver failure and today kidney failure. His ALT is 30,000. He is in ICU and they are taking heroicmeasures with him. He s on a vent and heavily sedated. How long can he possibly live. His Doctors say he is terminal but my friend believes he can turn a corner. Is that possible?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

I understand your concerns. chronic alcohol can lead to irreversible form of liver damage called cirrhosis. it is not possible for liver to revert itself back to healthy state.

He would need liver transplant which is very lengthy and complicated surgery. I would say that at this point chances of miracles are very few. and even if he survives this time, he won't for long without liver transplant.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
