Can Genital Warts Be Contracted Through Skin Contact?

Hello, I am seeing a guy who has genital warts. We haven t had sex but last night he touched my vagina with his fingers and I was wondering if I am at a risk of getting it as well just by fingering? I am freaking out here, any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Hello and welcome to HCM,
Genital warts are caused by virus called Human papilloma virus (HPV).
The virus is transmitted by genital route or by oral route.
Thus, the infection spreads by kissing or by unprotected sexual contact.
Mere touching may not transmit the infection with Human papilloma virus.
However, the genital warts should be treated in your partner since it carries risk of developing cancer of genital tract and upper aero-digestive tract.

Thanks and take care
Dr Shailja Puri
