Can Gerd And Hiatal Hernia In Past Cause Difficulty In Conceiving In Future?
I am 23 and married for about 4 months. My husband and me are not yet sure whether to reproduce. But frankly i believe in motherhood and would love to reproduce.I had a few health issues post my wedding.I was diagonised with GERD due to HIATAL HERNIA about 2months back through endoscopy.Through that time i have been fainting whenever i had unbearable pain.At first my family physician had doubts tat i had vasivagal syncope. Now all these health issues are making me more stressed about my future chances of becoming a mother.I would appreciate if you could guide me through this confusion and make it clear if its safe for me (and the baby) if i plan on having one.thank you.Rinu.

General & Family Physician, Dr. Vasudha's Response
Hi, I understand your concern. Pain in hiatus hernia & is a condition where some part of abdomen is herniated in thoracic cavity, GERD is regurgitation of acid gastric juices in esophagus--causing pain. Pain in this condition can be easily managed by Proton pump blockers & dietary restrictions along with life style changes. so it does not have possibility of creating problem in pregnancy. Though both the conditions do not affect baby growth/ pregnancy, hiatus hernia is likely to get aggravated due to raised intraabdominal pressure ( because of growing baby) I would advise you to get a full treatment of the condition before you plan for a pregnancy under a gasteroenterologist's care. This will help prevention of complications in pregnancy period. thanks. Once the hernia is confirmed to be miner/ repaired -- you can plan for your pregnancy.
