Can Goitre Cause Fatigue, dry Skin, constipation And Weight Gain?
I have a goiter and have had it for years, My blood work ls always been ok, however my MD will not do anything about the goiter or all the symptoms of hypothryoidism that I have do you know of anything i can take over the counter to help. I go again for another ultasound of my thyroid in two weeks however i am just told everything is the same . I am getting sick of being told the same thing over and over and see you next year for a follow up. I am extreamly tired, dry skin, constipation, weight gain for no reason.
Hi, Hypothyroid symptoms (fatigue, constipation, dry skin etc) are not specific for hypothyrodiism. ie people without hypothyroidism or goiter can have these symptoms. Treatment with thyroxine (thyroid hormone) may not improve your symptoms. If the symptoms are persistent you should do a detailed thyroid function tests (TSH, T3, T4, Free T3, Free T4, Lipid profile, sex hormone binding globulin) to look for rare causes like thyroid hormone resistance, T4 to T3 conversion defects.
For goiter the decision is to do a thyroid surgery or not. If your ultrasound and fine needle aspiration cytology is normal there is need for surgery and can be followed up.
