Can Gynecomastia And Erectile Dysfunction Be Treated Without A Surgery?

I have been diagnosed with gynecomastia, elevated prolactin and low testeosterone and ED due to being on Risperdal for 10 years for high functioning autism. Despite being off Risperdal for a year and off Abillify for a three months and losing 20 pounds within two months, the breasts have not shrunk and the ED has not resolved although my voice has deepened again and my body hair is coming back. I think there might be nerve damage in my penis. My current primary care physician says only surgery can correct gynecomastia if weight loss hasn t helped and exercise will only make the breasts bigger. unfortunately surgery will not be an option until I graduate from a physically demanding school program in 5 semesters. I begin my first semester on August 19th and there is a physical test on that day. Surgery now will cause me to fail the physical test. Do you know of a way to reverse gynecomastia and ED without surgery? Also, I m on Wellbutrin for depression now

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Gynocomastia may go away on its own without specific treatment. Since you have been on Risperdal for 10 years (for autism), its side effects are causing increased prolactin secretion & breast tissue development. You should inform your treating doctor so that the medicine can be monitored, tapered or substituted with any other medication that suits you better. Do not stop it all of a sudden because it will cause severe withdrawal symptoms. It can be done under a doctor or a detox center so that the withdrawal symptoms can be managed to keep you comfortable.

Medicine used to reduce gynecomastia is Tamoxifen(Clomiphene) but you should get clinically examined by a GP & take medicines under a doctor / health care provider. Once your sex hormone level( testosterone & estrogen) get balanced, ED should resolve.

For Premature Ejaculation & ED, you can consult a GP or Physiotherapist(pause-squeeze technique/ pelvic exercises), stay away from stress, depression, anxiety.

Cut on alcohol, smoking or addictions if any. Medicines like Sildenafil (Viagra) & Tadalafil (Adcirca) are effective for ED. Take high protein food, food rich in minerals, vitamin B6, B12 & adequate rest.

Your treating doctor may suggest surgery (Liposuction/ mastectomy) for gynecomastia if it does not respond to medicines.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
