Can Heartburn Cause Pain That Radiates To The Shoulders?

Can heartburn cause a lot of gas pains that radiate into shoulders? Belching seems to help. Pain worse at night. Started 3 days ago...awakens me approx 2:30am & sit the rest of the night on the couch. Started otc zantac 150mg daily, using tums prn, trialed simethicone but no relief.Just purchased gaviscon & alka seltzer tonight to trial. All started with a meal (spicy sausage, onions, green peppers, cabbage, potatoes on the grill). Bowels move daily. I am a 48 year old female with no health history. Wt wnl. Cholesterol wnl. Non-smoker. Very active. Have had ekg in the last year....nsr. Pulse rate ranges mid 70 s... I have a fitbit on which monitors. Not on any routine medications...This happened approx 1 mo ago as well and lasted approx 5 days (after eating onion rings). I am thinking I continue the zantac routine, avoid culprit foods, drinks and see how it goes?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi
Thanks for posting on HCM
The symptoms you describe could be caused by acute gastritis or GERD.These may give you heartburns that may radiate to neck, shoulder and even back.I will suggest you try the following:
-Take an ant-secretory(proton pump inhibitor) like omeprazole
-An antacid like maalox
-You may continue with zantac
-Avoid foods that aggravate symptoms
-Avoid eating and lying down immediately
-Eat small quantities and more frequently
-Take enough water
If symptoms persist, you see the Doctor for evaluation. You may also get an Hylori test and if positive, an eradication with antibiotics and proton pump inhibitor may be launched by your Doctor
Hope this will help
Best regards
