Can High Fever Affect The Cognitive Functions Of The Brain?

As a youth I had a fever of 108 from scarlet fever. In my old age I seem to feel that I have suffered damage to my brain capabiligties as I went to and had to drop out of college due to inability to absorb or function of school cirriculum , subject matter, etc. Is there a possibility that some damage occurred in my brain due to this high fever? I have been told that my hearing loss also happened due to the burning up of hair membranes in my ears.
