Can Hole In The Ear Drum Cause Imbalance?
Doctor, can a hole in the ear drum cause balancing liquid problem. My wife ( age 56 years) has a small hole in the left ear drum. Sometimes she becomes sick suddenly with out notice. during that time she cannot stand or see. If she opens her eyes she finds everything around her rotating. She vomits also during that time. She has to be on the bed during that time. It takes two or three days for her to recover and she becomes weak also after that .sometimes this will be there for a few days. Her BP goes up during that time and i understand the pulse rate also goes up. The MRI of brain is OK. Doctor said that all this is happening due to infection in the ear. If we get the ear drum hole closed thro surgery will the balancing liquid problem get solved. Presently she is taking vertin tablet whenever she gets the slight symptoms. The most probable causes I can think about are as follows:
- Cervical spondilitis with vertebral artery insufficiency causing vertigo
- Another problem can be related to cerebellum which has been ruled out by MRI of brain
- Fluid imbalance in semicircular canals situated in mastoid bone that is also called internal ear
I would advise her to consult a neurologist. Do MRI of cervical spine, arteriography of vertebral and carotid arteries along with that of brain. ENT opinion and related tests for vertigo related to ENT part. All these will give a probable diagnosis so that a specific treatment can also be started with.
