Can I 131 Therapy For Thyroid Canser Cause Nausea And Vomiting?

Patien had i 131 therapy treatment on Monday afternoon. The following day the patient experienced nausea and vomiting. The patient has been vomitting for 2 days now and the husband is concerned it is a reaction to the i 131, however, the patient isn't experiencing ANY of the side-effects that patients can have after this treatment. I have never known a patient to vomit after a therapy of iodine 131 for thyroid cancer and instructed the patient's family member to take the patient to the er after the third day s/p dosing in order to avoid subjecting the general public to high amounts of radidation. We normally ask patients to stay away from others for 3 to 5 days to ensure that most if the high levels of emmitting radiationg are dropped substantially through sweat, urine and saliva. Any thoughts?

Hello dear,

Nausea & vomiting are considered as few of the side effects from Radio Active Iodine treatment.
This is due to the effect of the Radioactive Iodine on Salivary glands & Taste buds.

But there is nothing to worry.
These symptoms are temporary & resolves on their own in a few days depending upon the dose and duration of the therapy.

However, chewing gum & sucking on sour candy or lemon stimulates the salivary gland, increases saliva production, maintains the moisture content/hydration of the oral cavity, thus help in combating the symptoms.

Wishing a Good Health.
Take care.
