Hi,
You should have your blood checked for elevated potassium.
Lisinopril can cause elevations in potassium which in turn can effect the heart and manifest as rhythm and/or rate changes/abnormalities. I would stop it and consult with your
primary care doctor right away to change to a different agent. If you have not already done so, you can consider the alternative anti-hypertensive agent
Amlodipine (trade name
Norvasc) as the side effects profile is generally benign and it is usually very well tolerated.
Additionally, you while taking Lisinopril you should also be aware of any swelling in the face and/or tongue as this may constitute a dangerous reaction. A trip to the ER may be warranted in the setting of such symptoms. In any case, you should consult with the prescribing provider to have blood testing done while taking the medication or at least discussing
alternative treatments.
Adding to the palpitations, an EKG and a cardiology evaluation is also not unreasonable to ensure you are not suffering from a condition called paroxysmal atrial
fibrillation, which can manifest as periodic episodes of palpitations and heart fluttering associated with
shortness of breath.
In summary:
- Stop lisinopril
- Speak to your primary MD immediately and have a potassium level checked
- Discuss any potential swelling of the face, mouth, and/or tongue
- Consult with your primary MD regarding a cardiology evaluation for underlying paroxysmal atrial fibrillation as a cause of your symptoms
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
