Can Infection Cause Birth Defects?

I m 17 weeks pregnant and was just diagnosed with ureaplasma through a vaginal swab culture. I started clindamycine today. Does this infection cause birth defects? If the infection goes away, do I not need to worry about pprom anymore? I m so scared.

Hello ma'am and welcome.

The infection per say, should not harm the fetus. What can although is the effect it can have (eg. PROM). If the infection is well addressed, then the risk of PROM reduces significantly. Also requiring attention, would be the antibiotic used to treat the infection and its possible side effects of the mother and fetus during pregnancy.

Hope this helps.

Best wishes.
