Can Knocking Sound In Ears Be A Sign Of Tinnitus?

I have the sound of crickets all the time in my head and hear my heartbeat pulsating in my head when I lay down. I m getting kind of used to that but now I hear knocking. It sounds just like someone is at the door. I ve actually gotten out of bed to answer the door late at night when it wakes me. Sometimes it is just as I am falling asleep but sometimes after I ve been asleep a couple of hours. What in the world is causing the knocking sound? I have read about tinnitus. Does that cause knocking, too?

Hi Dear ,

As per your query you have knocking sound in ears , which make it difficult to sleep . Well there can be many reasons for symptoms you mention in query like tinnitus ( as you mention in query ) , eustachian tube dysfunction , pulsative tinnitus or any psychological problem . But in your case it semms to me that symptoms are due to pulsative tinnitus . Pulsative tinnitus occur due to either overall increase in blood pressure or local increase in blood pressure do to blood vessel dysfunction Because pulsating tinnitus is usually caused by variation in blood pressure or blood flow. I would suggest you to consult ENT specialist for proper diagnosis . Doctor may order certain test like audiometery , CT scan ,MRI , low and high pitched ringing to rule out conditions like hearing loss , exposure to loud noises , earwax build-up , middle ear infection and vitals . Doctor may prescribe antibiotics , sedatives and supplement like ginkgo biloba . Doctor may also refer you to cardiologist or psychiatrist . Meditation and yoga will be very helpful .

Hope your concern has been resolved.

Best Wishes,
