Can Lidocaine And Motrin Be Taken For Severe Ear Pain?

My 7 (soon to be 8) year old son has been having severe ear pain for the 3rd day in a row. We have been in Mexico for the past week and he has done a lot of swimming in the ocean and also the swimming pool at the hotel. I went to the pharmacia and the gave me drops with hydocortizone (10 mg), lidocaine (50 mg) and told me 2 drops every 6 hours. I have done as directed for my son, along with motrin every 4-6 hours for over 48 hours and he is still in a lot of pain. I noticed some dried bloody discharge from this ear. We are supposed to get on the plane in leas than 12 hours to head back home to the US and I am concerned about him getting on the plane. I intend to taking him to the doctor once we get home, is there anything else I should be doing to try to ease his pain? Is this an emergency situation?

Hi..
Welcome to HEALTHCARE MAGIC..

I have gone through your query and can understand your concerns..

As per your complain there is a possibility that due to swimming there has been infection in ear leading to "Swimmer's Ear" that is a bacterial infection of the ear canal..

I would suggest you to consult an Otolaryngologist and get evaluated and a thorough clinical evaluation can be diagnostic and in case of infection he can advise your son to take antibiotics like Augmentin, anti-inflammatory painkiller like Ibuprofen, put antibiotic ear drops like Gentamycin and steroid ear drops for relief..

Pain can exaggerate in flight so it will be better if you take proper medication before boarding to prevent discomfort..

Hope this information helps.

Thanks and regards.
