Can Manic Symptoms Of Incessant Talking And Grandiose Behaviour In A Bipolar Personality Lead To Other Psychotic Episodes?

My 24 yr old son has bi polar, denies it completely, so hence does not take med or seek therapy of any kind...he had one psychotic episode in 2012. ....Abilify for one year. He has been hospitalized 2 other times but refuses treatment. He is manic right now; grandiose , blanket statements, odd behaviour and topics of conversation, incessant talking ( if given an audience). My husband and I don't know how to address all these things or even if we should. I'm afraid of another psychotic episode..... My question is...can the mania lead to another psychotic episode? If so , how and when do we insist on seeing a doctor. What should we do to possibly avert another episode.?

Mania is associated with absence of insight regarding problem. Because of grandiosity patient feel them-self more capable then others, and do not follow doctor/family members advice. So they refused need for any treatment.

Mania is itself a psychotic episode. In such case patient needs attention as early as family member suspect manic symptoms, or on occurrence of first symptom.

If patient do not accept treatment then following steps are commonly used: Medicine in food, depot injection or involuntary admission in psychiatric hospital.

You can also tell me about other associated symptoms to understand case and help you better.

Hi, Welcome to Health care magic forum.
The main symptom of the bipolar, or any psychiatric problem is to say that he is not sick, and denying the treatment.
As you describe there is every possibility of the exacerbation of the disease if not treated properly.
First thing you have to do is inform his doctor about the problem.
There will be depot injection forms to be given every fortnightly or monthly.In this case he need not take any tablets.
