Can Medication For Cold And Fever Cause A Spike In Blood Sugar Levels?
SIr, My wife is 33 years old. 7 days back she suffered from Cold and fever for which she consulted a doctor. From yesterday, she is having fatigue and just out of curiosity, we checked her Fasting Blood Sugar. We were shocked to see that it is 126mg/dl. But her PPBS was 142 mg/dl. Today also her FBS was 136 mg/dl. She never had hyperglycemia and her FBS was around 84mg/dl few weeks back. Could you please let me know if it is really pre diabetic or the medications she took for cold / fever could cause a spike in FBS? Thanks a lot in advance.
Hi, Thanks for posting in HCM. I understand your concern. Fever is a stressful condition due to which there could be an increase in blood sugar levels of about 10 to 15%. But what picture you are giving of her fasting glucose on two occasions us quite more than what could have caused due to fever. Hence, it could be also pre- diabetes, which needs to be assessed. To know weather such fluctuations has caused due to fever acutely or it was happening before due to impaired glucose tolerance, kindly get her Glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) levels checked, which would give a better picture of her glucose control status. Depending in the report, you can take an opinion from Physician or Diabetologist. Hope the things explained is clear. All the best.
