Can Nicotine Patches Be Used After Surgeries?

I am a Registered Nurse and I have a question about if Nicotine patches should be used or not in the hospital or after surgeries. Vascular surgeons are not prescribing them in my KY hospital because of poor healing after surgery. What is your thoughts? To use the patch or not that is the question?
