Can One Develop A Tolerance For Paxil After Time?

I would like to know if someone can build a tolerance to Paxil so it no longer works for i.e. anziety? I have been taking Paxil for 20 years on and off. My doctor said I was a lifer . I take 20 mg a day. If it is not longer working for me like it used to why would increasing the dosage make a difference (if that is what my doctor will recommend)?

Hello,

Paxil (paroxetine), as an antidepressant-dose-20 mg/day initially; may increase by 10 mg/day at intervals of greater than or equal to 7 days (max, 50 mg/day).

Paroxetine is also prescribed for the treatment of generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), usually at doses that are comparable to their efficacy in major depression, and may be preferable to the usage of benzodiazepines in the treatment of chronic anxiety.

Your Psychiatrist will be the better to judge whether to increase the dose of Paroxetine or switch over to benzodiazepines. Tolerance is unknown with Paroxetine, a SSRI( serotonin reuptake inhibitor), but tolerance can occur with benzodiazepines.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
