Hi! I am a 30 y.o. gay male, no medical history. Over the last 2 years, I have been having pretty bad sore throat episodes, throat infections, tonsilitis etc. I also had a lymph node that wouldnt go away... I have been fine for months and now again I have a bad sore throat with fever etc. But now I know I think I know the reason but I am too shy to talk to a doctor about it. I enjoy giving deep oral sex (deepthroating), and I realized that everytime I had a sore throat (that lasted for days), I had had that kind of oral sex a few days before... Can you confirm please? And what do I need to do? I am a little worried... Thanks.
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
Yes, it is true that doing oral sex without maintaining proper genital hygiene can cause oro-pharyngeal that is oral and throat infections. You seem to be suffering from the same.
So, my suggestion is to consult an Emergency room and get checked and a course of antibiotics like Augmentin and anti-inflammatory painkillers like Ibuprofen can be advised. You can also do warm saline gargles and antiseptic mouthwash gargle.
You can use condoms while doing oral sex and can be cautious about genital hygiene.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
