Can Paronychia Cause A Swollen Painful Lump On The Thumb?

I think what I have on my thumb is paronychia. It is red, swollen and painful. There is yellow pus. But right in the center of my cuticle it feels like there is an abcess under the cuticle. I ve been soaking my thumb in hot water and it takes some of the swelling down. I just thought this would go away on its own but need to know if I should now seek professional help. It s not healing.
