Can Pernicious Anemia Cause Low Potassium Level In Blood?
I have pernici with enlarged liver and spleen. I take 15mg Folic Acid a day and 1000ml B12 a week. Also many other medications. I have also been tested and I don t absorb any B12 at all through my stomach. Now they have found that my potassium has gone very low. 2.9 at one point. Could the low potassium be another side effect of the pernicious anemia? Also now they just found out I have a lot of blood in my stool.
Pernicious anemia per say is not responsible for the low level of potassium in the blood. It is the bleeding through the GIT in form of blood in stool which is responsible for the low levels of the potassium in the blood as red blood cells are lysed and their content with electrolytes are lost in the stool. You need a systemic evaluation with complete hemogram and other relevant investigations for the final diagnosis and cure accordingly to prevent further development of cardiac arrhythmia and conduction disorders which may prove highly fatal.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
