Can Pinched Nerve In The Lower Back Cause Pain And Discomfort While Walking?

Pinched nerve in my lower back causing pain in my right hip and thigh down to my knees. Has got to the point I have trouble walking without being in a lot of pain. Hurts when I turn over in bed, lifting my leg to get in or out of bed or a vehicle. Have a dull ache even when sitting, in my hip. Pain seems to be getting worse every day. Doctor advised of a pinched nerve and also arthritis possibly. What should be the next step for me and what are my options?

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi,

Noted the history of a pain while walking, bending from buttock going down the leg, Doctor suggested for a pinched nerve and wants to know what next to do.
Surely the first diagnosis is possible by clinical evaluation of the muscle thinning or atrophy, power, blood circulation and so on.
To be confirmed by MRI of the lower spine.
Related blood tests like for CBC and diabetes.
All these will give a proper diagnosis and thus allow for planning of a proper management.
This can be in the form of surgery if the disc has prolapsed too much.
If in a mild form then physiotherapy, spinal support, anti-inflammatory medicines with painkiller properties can really help you.
You will then need to change the lifestyle.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. T. Chandrakant, General Surgeon
